Anthony Head, who has starred in a range of hit shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Little Britain, has adopted a chimp through a wildlife charity.

The actor has adopted Naika, an abused circus chimp, through the charity Care for the Wild International (CWI).

The money raised through the charity's chimp adoption scheme goes to fund the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, Kenya, where Naika now lives.

Anthony said: "I have adopted Naika who suffered years of abuse in a circus after poachers killed her mother and family when she was just a few weeks old.

"After becoming ill and no longer able to perform, Naika was fortunate enough to be rescued by the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

"Care for the Wild International's chimpanzee adoption provides funding for the sanctuary in Kenya, giving chimps like Naika the life they deserve.

"Chimpanzee populations are endangered by the ongoing destruction of their natural habitat in the west and central African rainforests.

"However, increasing threats are the growing international demand for bush meat and the illegal pet trade.

"Adopting a chimpanzee through CWI is a great way to provide a safe, secure and permanent refuge for orphaned and abused chimpanzees who have been directly affected by these threats."

Karen Pettman CWI's projects manager, said: "CWI is thrilled that such a respected actor has recognised the plight of chimps like Naika.

"Adopting an animal through CWI is a perfect way to connect with an endangered wild animal, become part of its story and protect its species in the wild."
